I was a shy and sensitive child growing up. My Filipino immigrant parents did the best they could in raising me with the knowledge and experience they had. They worked a lot and couldn’t meet my emotional needs as a child. I cried a lot, stayed in my room often, and wasn’t taught how to regulate and process my emotions. It was tough with the generation gap, cultural differences, and language barrier. When I was younger, I struggled with expressing my feelings and speaking up because I was afraid of how my parents would respond or react. That inevitably showed up in all forms of relationships growing up.
I started healing my inner child when I worked with my spiritual coach Shannon in 2020. She provided various practices during our sessions that helped me tremendously in unlocking the childhood wounds I kept buried inside me. Because of her mentorship, I’ve been actively deepening my spiritual practices and connecting with my inner child more.
Now as a 30-something-year-old woman, I have the tools and knowledge to give my inner child what she truly needs. I’ve learned to decipher my astrological birth chart to strengthen my connection with her. Through astrology, I have gained valuable knowledge that has helped me heal my core childhood wounds. I’ve written loving letters to her, provided a safe space for her to express her emotions and creativity, and become the parent she needed. When she cries, I give her the biggest hug imaginable. When she shows me her art, I say, “You made that?! It’s so beautiful! I’m so proud of you!” Also, occasionally, I’d buy her cute things to fill up our space. She LOVES cute things. 😍
Five years of inner child healing has massively changed me. My sensitivity as a child was seen as a negative trait, but now I see it as my superpower. My empathy for the world is my greatest quality and it’s my favorite thing about myself. I’m not afraid of speaking my truth in difficult situations and conversations even when my voice shakes. I allow myself to express my creativity with others even if people don’t understand it initially. Most of all, healing my inner child has helped me show up authentically. I give younger Char full permission to play and express herself freely because that’s what she’s here to do. ❤️
Inner child healing isn’t linear. It all varies from person to person. I believe it’s a crucial part of our healing journey and takes patience, vulnerability, and understanding. As you go through this journey, it will radically improve your relationship with yourself and others. If you are new to it, take it one day at a time.
Before I answer journal prompts, I designate one page for my creativity. I mainly do collages and scrapbooking, but I will draw something on other days. Have fun and allow your inner child to create freely with no judgment!
Here are some prompts I picked out from different resources online. I answered them on the other page of my journal and I thought I’d share them here if you’d like to answer them in your journal:
What were your favorite childhood activities, and do you still engage in them? If not, why?
Describe your ideal day spent with your inner child. What activities would you engage in? How would you feel?
What messages did you receive about your emotions as a child and how does it affect your emotional expression now?
How can you be a loving parent to your inner child?
